Analytics Engineer (L5) - Playback Data

We want to provide a seamless, high-quality streaming experience across a wide range of viewing contexts and devices - from the shows you watch on your phone while on the go, to movie night at home. Supporting such a broad range of streaming experiences requires intricate coordination of systems behind the scenes. To do this, Netflix encodes the content that members love, distributes it to our content delivery network, and adaptively streams it to a wide range of devices.

Our Client Data Science & Engineering team uses some of Netflix's largest datasets to generate insights about the end-to-end streaming process and the systems that underpin it. Our end goal is to drive higher-quality viewing experiences across the variety of devices and networks our global members use. We're looking for an analytics engineer to be our steward of playback data, shepherding it from telemetry on user devices all the way through to high visibility dashboards that are used by our engineering and business teams to monitor and improve the Netflix user experience.

In this role, you will:
  • Be at the forefront of using analytics and data engineering skills to ensure that playback data can be used effectively across the company.
  • Become one of the core stewards of the playback data model, focusing on monitoring, understanding the playback experience as it evolves within our product, and influencing data best practices for producers and consumers.
  • Lead efforts to strengthen and evolve this critical dataset for an increasingly complicated business landscape by developing and owning data pipelines, tools, and data products that make insights widely available across the company.

To be successful in this role, you have:
  • Passion for exploring and building highly technical datasets and logging.
  • A high level of fluency in SQL and experience in engineering data pipelines.
  • Proficiency with Python and/or other languages, including TypeScript or Scala, is a plus.
  • Familiarity with software engineering practices (experience with data processing and tool development at scale is a plus).
  • Experienced at building compelling, narrative data visualizations with dashboard tools.
  • Exceptional spoken and written communication with technical and non-technical audiences; highly effective at developing meaningful stakeholder relationships and deep domain expertise.
  • Comfort with ambiguity; ability to thrive with minimal oversight and process.
