Position Overview

The work is performed according to specific supervisory instruction or established procedures, and the employees often perform tasks as a part of a crew. The employees will operate assigned vehicles and equipment.
 
This position will work on crews that do major paving projects, as well as small repairs such as utility cuts, potholes, berms. We also respond to emergency response to winter weather, windstorms, and civil unrest. This position will assist the skilled Sr Raker on the paving crews. Employees in this class must have knowledge of and use hand and power tools, operate various types of machinery and equipment, and employ proper techniques. Personal contacts are intra-and inter-departmental, with the public and outside contractors to provide information and coordinate work activities.

SDOT has an exciting opportunity for a Maintenance Laborer on our Asphalt Paving team within the MOD Division. These experienced professionals will assist our Asphalt paving crews. You will also be part of a skilled snow and ice team helping keep the city of Seattle mobile. Come help keep Seattle moving!

 

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Assists as a part of a crew working in the street right of way repairing small utility cuts, base repair ,potholes, installing berms. This is also part of the major paving crews you would assist with the grinding and repaving of city streets. We also do major pathway paving where you would assist the Sr Rakers.
  • Drives pickup trucks and other motorized vehicles or equipment in connection with work activities.
  • Assist with stocking raker trucks as well as cleaning all tools.
  • Must have knowledge of and use hand and power tools, operate various types of equipment. 
  • Able to rake, shovel rock and lift heavy objects.  
  • Support department goals in promoting diversity and social justice.
  • Must have knowledge of hand and power tools.
  • Assit set up of traffic control , including flagging jobs.
  • Maintains and cleans equipment daily .
  • Assist with traffic control set ups, and traffic control plans.

 

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications 
One year of experience performing general laboring/manual work involving the construction, installation, repair, and maintenance of public facilities
 
OR combinations of education, training and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability.

 Desired Qualifications

  • Flagging Card Familiar with City of Seattle Streets
  • Experience working in traffic.
  • Experience working with hot asphalt. 
  • Experience with hand and power tools. 
  • Understanding of SDOT Safety Policy

Other Requirements: 
Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. 
  • Required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time. 
  • Frequently required to lift objects up to 50 pounds. 
  • May occasionally be required to lift objects weighing more than 50 pounds. During inclement weather maybe on 12-hour shifts.

License, Certification and Other Requirements 

  • Washington State driver's license is required.
