As a Customs and Border Protection Officer (CBPO), you will join a workforce of over 60,000 dedicated professionals. Becoming a CBPO means joining the ranks of Federal Law Enforcement Officers.

Your Primary Responsibilities:

  • Enforce customs, immigration, and agricultural laws.
  • Facilitate legitimate trade and travel.
  • Conduct inspections of individuals and transportation modes.
  • Decide the admissibility of individuals entering the U.S.
  • Prevent unauthorized entry and smuggling of prohibited goods.

Salary and Benefits

Starting base pay for new CBPOs is outlined below:

  • GS-9: $61,111 - $124,443 annually
Locality pay varies by location. Trained officers can earn up to $45,000 in overtime in addition to their base salary.

This role follows a career ladder progression, advancing from GS-5 to GS-12. Promotion eligibility occurs after 52 weeks in each grade, subject to agency discretion.

Officers may select from a wide array of benefits, including health and dental insurance, a robust leave program, and a Thrift Savings Plan, similar to a 401(k).

LOCATION INCENTIVES

Eligible candidates accepting specific duty locations may receive an additional 15%-25% of their annual salary for three years, alongside overtime. Certain locations offer a 25% incentive for up to four years.

Locations offering 25% recruitment incentives include:

  • Various sites in CA, FL, ME, MI, MN, MT, ND, VT, and WA
Locations offering 15% recruitment incentives include:
  • Sites in HI, ND, VT, and WA
Calexico, CA offers a 10% recruitment incentive.

Qualifications

Qualify for GS-9 through experience, education, or a mix:

Experience: At least one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade, including:
  • Detaining or arresting law violators.
  • Enforcing laws on imports and exports.
  • Using intelligence techniques for threats and risk assessments.
  • Conducting interviews in a law enforcement role.

Experience includes making swift and accurate decisions regarding the enforcement of import/export regulations and immigration laws.
Education: A master's degree or higher, or equivalent advanced education.
Combination: Blend of specialized experience and advanced education as reflected in your application and transcripts.
Other Requirements
Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen.
Residency: Must have U.S. residency for three of the last five years.
Age Limit: Must be eligible for selection before 40, with some exceptions for current or former federal law enforcement officers.
Veteran's Preference: Veterans' preference may exempt you from age limits.
Training: Complete a two-week paid orientation followed by 101-day training at the CBP Field Operations Academy in Glynco, GA. Spanish language proficiency training may be required depending on assignment.
