Director Financial Reporting and Technical Accounting

Position Summary

The Director Financial Reporting and Technical Accounting oversees accounting teams whose main function is the timely and accurate internal and external financial reporting for JetBlue Airways Corporation. The Director directs the financial statement close process, oversees the financial statement audit and researches accounting issues. The Director also has overall responsibility for all financial reporting to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Department of Transportation and other governmental entities. The Director is also responsible for certain accounting areas withing the control function such as stock compensation, earnings per share (EPS), debt, fleet accounting and fixed assets.

The Director Financial Reporting and Technical Accounting is a key member of the Controller’s Group and the broader Finance team that is dedicated to driving the financial strategy in support of corporate goals. The Director is an influential leader who is comfortable with maintaining a public profile and is motivated by holding primary accountability for high-profile projects. The Director is skilled at building and maintaining relationships at all levels, can perform well under stress and time constraints, is able to change priorities and focus to meet business demands, and exhibits the JetBlue values of Safety, Caring, Integrity, Passion and Fun.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Lead the monthly, quarterly and year-end accounting close process, ensuring timeliness and compliance with US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for both external reporting and internal management reporting
  • Oversee the filing processes required for SEC reporting including 10-Ks, 10-Qs, 8-Ks as well as related XBRL tagging
  • Draft all components of 10-K and 10-Q filings, including the consolidated financial statements, notes and management discussion and analysis
  • Effectively communicate financial results and trends to senior leadership
  • Assist in supporting the quarterly earnings release, investor update and earnings call preparation
  • Prepare written technical accounting memos and consult with senior management regarding the impact of these issues
  • Monitor new accounting pronouncements, support implementation of new accounting standards and evaluate accounting for new transactions
  • Direct, monitor and ensure compliance with internal controls on the financial reporting process
  • Oversee the department responsible for areas including EPS, investments, debt, stock based compensation, fleet accounting and fixed assets
  • Recommend and assist in the implementation of process improvements to simplify, standardize and streamline processes
  • Lead and participate in Corporate and Controller team projects and initiatives
  • Liase with external and internal auditors to ensure accurate and timely resolution of audit matters
  • Supervise a team and be responsible for all hiring, training, performance reviews, and coaching of the staff. Take a significant role in the development of crewmembers to support their engagement, growth and goal achievement
  • All other duties as assigned

Minimum Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting; OR a demonstrated capability to perform job responsibilities with a combination of a High School Diploma/GED and four (4) years of relevant work experience
  • Certification as a Public Accountant (CPA)
  • Seven (7) years’ accounting experience
  • Three (3) years’ leadership experience
  • Knowledge of GAAP and SEC regulations
  • Experience establishing relationships with leaders across the organization and outside audit firm
  • Available for occasional overnight travel (10%)
  • Able to work flexible hours and be available for emergency response and on short notice
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug test
  • Must be legally eligible to work in the country in which the position is located
  • Authorization to work in the US is required. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship

Preferred Experience and Qualifications

  • Proficient with SAP and Workiva
  • Master’s degree/MBA
  • Public Accounting experience
  • Previous airline accounting experience
  • Broad accounting and finance experience
  • Exposure to airline debt and financing

  • Regular attendance and punctuality
  • Potential need to work flexible hours and be available to respond on short-notice
  • Able to maintain a professional appearance
  • When working or traveling on JetBlue flights, and if time permits, all capable crewmembers are asked to assist with light cleaning of the aircraft

  • Must fulfill safety accountabilities as prescribed by JetBlue’s Safety Management System

  • Identify safety and/or security concerns, issues, incidents or hazards that should be reported and report them whenever possible and by any means necessary including JetBlue’s confidential reporting systems (Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) or Safety Action Report (SAR))
  • Responsible for adhering to all applicable laws, regulations (FAA, OSHA, DOT, etc.) and Company policies, procedures and risk controls
  • Uphold JetBlue’s safety performance metric goals and understand how they relate to their duties and responsibilities
  • The use of ChatGPT or any other automated tool during the interview process will disqualify a candidate from being considered for the position

Compensation:

  • The base pay range for this position is between $160,000 and $205,000 per year. Base pay is one component of JetBlue’s total compensation package, which may also include performance bonuses, restricted stock units, as well as access to healthcare benefits, a 401(k) plan and company match, crewmember stock purchase plan, short-term and long-term disability coverage, basic life insurance, free space available travel on JetBlue, and more
